1. Pick up freelance work online
Make money online through websites like Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer.com. These sites offer opportunities to do a variety of freelance jobs such as writing, programming, design, marketing, data entry, and virtual assistant. Are you fluent in a second language? Check out sites like Gengo or Blend Express or start a business with your own site. No matter what you do as a freelancer, keep an eye on the going rate for the type of work you provide so you know if you're charging too much or too little.
2. Website and Application Testing
Another way to make money from home is with sites like UserTesting.com. You get paid for your thoughts on how well—or not so well—certain sites and apps performed. To be accepted you will have to complete a short test and then you will be paid depending on the type of test. UserTesting.com does not disclose the exact amount.
3. Pick up tasks on Amazon's Mechanical Turk
Even in the age of automation, some jobs still require a human touch. Companies often outsource these jobs through services like Amazon's Mechanical Turk. As a "worker", the tasks you will be assigned can be tedious - tagging images, transcribing videos, classifying receipts - and can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Temp employers, or "requesters," set a price for each task and approve the finished product before paying you. This can leave room for scams, so do your research. Join a community like the MTurk Crowd forum or the MTurk and Turker Nation subreddits that can steer you away from dodgy sellers. These communities and fellow "workers" can answer questions and give a realistic idea of how much money you can expect to make.
4. Make money from your blog as an affiliate
If you are a blogger who has a decent amount of traffic, you can earn money by joining an affiliate network. Affiliate partners (that's you) get paid when someone clicks through from the site to the affiliate site and makes a purchase. Some bloggers make a lot of money this way. Read more about affiliate marketing and other ways bloggers can make money.
5. Buy and sell domain names
A domain name is just the website address (eg 'savethestudent.org' or 'mysite.co.uk') and there are many extensions (.com, .net, .co,.uk etc.).
GoDaddy.com costs just £4 to sign up, or even free with Bluehost packages.
Still, premium domain names can fetch £1,000s, if not millions, when sold. In 2007, VacationRentals.com sold for a cool $35 million!
You won't come across anything like that now, but you can still make a quick buck with a little searching.
The trick is to find available domain names that have some commercial value. Capture them and then list them for sale on a site like Sedo.com.
6. Sell your items on Etsy
Do you have a passion for woodworking, jewelry making, embroidery or pottery? Sell your wares on Etsy, a website for artisans selling home goods, art and knick-knacks. Etsy boasted about 96 million active buyers and earned over $13.5 billion in merchandise sales in 2021, according to Statista data. Learn more about how to make money on Etsy.
7. Trading on the Online Market
Investing in the stock market isn't necessarily an easy way to make money, but it can be lucrative if you learn how to do it right. Likewise, you can suffer significant losses if you don't take it seriously.
Today there is no need to finance the yachts of Wolf of Wall Street brokers. You can do all this yourself using online market trading platforms.
After spending many hours researching this new opportunity, I use the popular eToro.com platform.
eToro has more than 20 million users worldwide and offers free practice accounts. They featured in the BBC Two documentary 'Traders: Millions by the Minute' and sponsor several Premier League football clubs.
8. Publish a Kinde e-book
If there's one thing students are good at, it's research and writing. With the Kindle Store, anyone can publish an eBook and make money on Amazon.
The Kindle app is now available on any device, so your global market is huge!
List your book for £1.49-£6.99 and get 70% of sales. Since Amazon is the ultimate sales machine (and remember, people want to spend), this is a fantastic deal. The key to success with ebooks is to create value and write non-fiction. Bringing together the information you've researched and gathered about a common problem (eg job hunting 'secrets') and then presenting it in an easy-to-digest format (e-book) justifies someone spending a few quid on it.
9. Sell your course notes
If you don't mind sharing your notes with other students, this is a good way to earn some extra money.
There are several sites where you can upload your notes. When another student downloads them, you get paid.
Sites like Nexus Notes and Stuvia let you write your notes for free. They take a small cut of the sale for connecting you with customers.
You can send handwritten notes, but you'll probably make more money if you write them.
